1 November 2018

How are you? I realize I just posted yesterday but I really want to share with you what I plan to do on the next couple of days.
I’m really happy to say that I will be joining the Folktaleweek challenge, created by a group of illustrators whom I like very much! The prompts were released last 29th so I will be working on my ideias and sketches for the next couple of days (after inktober I don’t think i’ll be able to do one drawing a day again so soon so I will take my time planning and illustrating everything!)

I hope I have the time for it though. One never knows what life will through at us, but even If I don’t draw everyday I’ll be happy If I can make half the prompts. Inktober was really tiring and I need to rest so I won’t be pushing myself too much.

If you want to know more about thins challenge head over to instagram and search the #folktaleweek tag. You’ll find all there is to know about the challenge with the added bonus of looking at all the amazing illustrations artists around the world have already created!

I’ll try and publish all my sketches and progress here as I go along.

Have a very nice day!

31 October 2018

I cannot believe I have made it until the end! These last fifteen days have been more difficult than any I have had when it comes to finding the time to work on this (time consuming) project. Regarding, however, the ability to draw whatever I have in my mind I feel I have progressed more than ever before! I’m really happy I did this challenge.

For now I will rest a bit and take things a bit more slowly. I don’t want to lose all my hard won ease though so I will still be drawing every day. Just not as hard and I won’t berate myself if I take two or three days to sketch out a new ideia! Or even not draw some day or another and enjoy some of my other hobbies which have taken quite a blow this month.

I’m also going to try to participate on #foltktaleweek so during the next few days I will sketch some ideas and work on my character building. Am really excited for that one!

Here is the result of my last inktober drawings.
Have a very nice week!

15 October 2018

Hello friends,

How have you been these past days? I’m still not used to having a blog so posts are yet to be regular, but I really wanted to share my progress with #inktober this month and how I’ve been doing so far.

So I planned as many themes as I could in advance and usually work on my sketches on my lunch break (at my work place) and then finish them when I get home at night. It’s already halfway through (finally!) and I’m beginning to feel a tiny bit tired, but the progress has been really great.

In the beggining I was really undecided with my sketches so I spent a lot of time doing my drawings again and again, but slowly I’ve become a bit surer of myself and it takes less and less time to illustrate the day’s post.

Here are my inktober entries so far 😉

Have a nice week!

24 September 2018

(even though it’s still very hot weather around here!)

During the summer here in Portugal we go to the beach very often. However I also enjoy some quiet days, away from all the sunbathing people, drawing and visiting museums. It was during one of those trips that I decided to take my camera for the first time.

Hope you like it!

PS: this year I will try and publish a drawing for everyday of inktober and so this blog will be very inktober themed for the whole month!

17 August 2018

New Year’s resolutions are something that torments me all year long. Since I remember that every year I set goals for myself, and I reach this time of the year and realize that I haven’t ticked even half my boxes yet. If I’m able to check goals off my list by the end of August I’m in a really good year!

In the midst of the normal goals that are common to many people across this land, is what I think should be my main goal this year: working on my portfolio. Because of its comprehensive nature, this objective unfolds in many dimensions, which turns it bit of a monster.

In addition to redoing my website, a large part involves creating commissions for myself (work that I would like to be hired to do), developing my instagram, creating a blog, amongst others.

And well, it’s the middle of August and I’m maybe halfway to my goal. No doubt it’s something I remember and for which I work, if not all, then most of my days. From scribbling on my notebooks, to “wallowing” in HTML, to get my website up and running online.

Today was one of those days. Maybe because it’s summer, I’ve been itching to draw fruit, and today I did something I had not done in a long time: I drew on the beach. And it felt really, really good! So much so that when I got home I grabbed my pencils to continue and I cannot wait to see the final result.

I’m thinking of using these illustrations to make a kind of pattern for packaging but only time will tell what they will be in the end!

I took this opportunity to try out my new color pencils and realized that I missed it so much! I cannot always give a carefree style to my drawings as I want (perfectionist alert!), but I think the final result will be just fine for what I have in mind.

Have a nice weekend everyone!

8 July 2018

I never thought of myself as someone who would someday have a blog, yet here I am posting what I hope to be the first of many posts.

Illustration is something I always enjoyed without realizing I could make a career out of it, which was the reason I studied communication design in college. What happened however was that I also fell in love with design, and so began my professional career in the field. It was only recently, thanks to a renewed urge to draw again, that I realized that I didn’t need to abandon one field for another and that, together; they could produce really great results.

As such I decided to create this blog, to serve as a sort of playground for design and illustration, in order to share my experiences with all the kindred spirits who wish to be part of this small adventure.

For all those who don’t know me, I am Raquel Russo, a 24-year-old designer and illustrator, born and living in Portugal. I’m a bit shy but also happy being around people who are dear to me. I love having cozy days with my family and my boyfriend, most especially when it’s winter time. However here in Portugal the sun shines all year around, so more often than not the weather is perfect to go outdoors. I also enjoy camping and hiking, despite not doing it as often as I wish I did, since I crave being in the middle of nature.

When I’m not working, drawing or camping I also dedicate myself to reading quite a bit (even if lately I have not spent as much time as I wish I was on this activity). My favorites are mostly classics, Jane Austen being, without a doubt, my absolute bedside author. I also love the Bronte sisters, Tolstoy, Charles Dickens, Margaret Atwood and a couple more that I’m not remembering right now (I’ll try and make an actual list sometime!).

Thank you very much if you’ve read this far, and I hope to post illustration and design related work very soon!
